Walnut-Stained Plywood Menu Boards with Ring Mechanism and Leather Hinge Binding for Capriccio's

Capriccio's is a restaurant with a considered visual identity — clean, typographically precise, and confident in its restraint. When the client came to us for menu boards, the brief called for a format that matched that character: a natural material, a minimal brand mark, and a binding mechanism that allowed menu inserts to be updated without replacing the board itself. The result is a walnut-stained plywood board with an integrated chrome ring mechanism, bound along the spine with black leather hinge straps and silver rivets.

01

The Board: Walnut-Stained Plywood and Laser Engraving

The board is cut from plywood and finished in a walnut stain — a warm, mid-dark tone that gives the surface depth and consistency without the cost or variation of solid timber. The grain of the plywood reads through the stain, adding texture to the surface without distracting from the branding. The Capriccio's mark is laser-engraved into the front face: a circular emblem with the name set in a clean serif inside a double-rule ring, positioned in the centre of the panel. The engraving burns through the stained surface to produce a darker recessed mark that reads with precision against the warm background. The logo is compact and well-proportioned for the panel — present without dominating, legible at the distance a guest holds a menu.

02

The Binding: Leather Hinge Straps and Silver Rivets

The two panels are connected along the left edge by black leather hinge straps — flat strips of leather threaded through laser-cut slots in the plywood and fixed with silver rivets. Two straps per board, one at the top and one at the bottom of the spine, give the binding its structure and allow the board to open flat without stress on the hinge points. The silver rivets are set flush against the leather surface, bright in finish and precisely placed. The combination of black leather and silver hardware against the walnut-stained wood creates a clean material contrast — three tones, each distinct, each contributing to the overall finish of the piece.

03

The Ring Mechanism: Chrome, Integrated, Replaceable

The interior spine carries a chrome two-ring binder mechanism mounted on a metal plate, set flush into the plywood between the two panels. The rings hold printed menu inserts — pages can be added, removed, or replaced without touching the board itself, which means the physical object survives menu updates and seasonal changes indefinitely. The mechanism is polished chrome, consistent in finish with the silver rivets on the exterior, and sized to hold a standard insert page without excess bulk on the spine. If you are producing menu boards for a venue that updates its menu regularly and needs a durable branded format that holds up through repeated use, we can develop a custom design to your specifications.
