Restaurant Menu Sizes: US Standards and the Covers and Stands That Fit Them

Restaurant Menu Sizes: US Standards and the Covers and Stands That Fit Them

Most menu size guides stop at the paper. They tell you that 8.5 × 11 in is the standard and leave you to find out later that your new cover does not take the sheets your designer printed. This guide starts with the standard US menu sizes and then shows which menu cover, clipboard or table stand fits each one.

The format still matters: in a Toast survey of 850 US adults, 81% said they prefer a physical menu, and only 1% chose QR codes.

What is the standard size for a restaurant menu?

The standard restaurant menu size in the US is 8.5 × 11 in (US Letter). It is easy to print, fits standard covers and holds a full one-page dinner menu. The other US sizes in regular use are Legal (8.5 × 14 in), the narrow 2/3 Letter, Square (8.5 × 8.5 in) and Half Letter (5.5 × 8.5 in). Menus designed in Europe use A4, 2/3 A4, Square 210 × 210 mm and A5 instead.

Letter or A4: the mistake that costs a reorder

A4 and US Letter look the same until you put one into a cover made for the other. A4 is 0.23 in narrower and 0.69 in taller than Letter. An A4 sheet sticks out of a Letter cover, and a Letter sheet slides around in an A4 cover.

This happens more often than it should: menu templates, design agencies abroad and franchise brand books often default to A4. Before you order covers, check the actual size of the file your designer prints, not the size you think it is.

Which menu size fits your restaurant format?

Full-service restaurant, one-page dinner menu. US Letter. One sheet per side in a two-page cover keeps the menu fast to read.

Steakhouse or restaurant with a long menu. Legal 8.5 × 14 in, or a Letter booklet with several pages. Long lists of cuts, sides and wines need vertical space.

Cocktail bar and wine list. 2/3 Letter or Half Letter. A narrow list is easy to hold with a glass in the other hand and fits on a crowded bar.

Drinks lists work best in a smaller, separate cover.

Café, bakery, brunch. Half Letter or A5 on a clipboard or table stand. Small tables have no room for a full-size menu.

Dessert and specials. Half Letter in a small cover, or 4 × 6 in and 5 × 7 in cards in a table stand or table tent, so the offer stays on the table after the main menu is collected.

Hotel room service and guest information. US Letter or A4 in a hardcover folder that survives months in a room.

How many pages should a menu have?

Fewer than most restaurants print. Every extra page adds time before the guest orders and splits attention between dishes. A practical structure:

  • 1 page (Letter or Legal): cafés, bistros, short seasonal menus.
  • 2–4 pages: full-service restaurants with starters, mains, desserts and drinks.
  • Separate drinks and wine list: when drinks run longer than one page, move them to their own narrow or Half Letter menu instead of adding pages to the food menu.

How sheets are attached: choose by how often you change the menu

Metal binder Ring or post binder inside the cover Run a long menu or wine list that changes page by page
Elastic band A folded booklet of sheets is held by a cord along the spine Print the menu as a small booklet, for drinks or desserts
Hardcover Rigid book-style cover with fixed or replaceable pages Need a premium menu that lasts for years in fine dining or hotels

Corner mountings: slide the sheet corners in and out, no tools needed.

Checklist: measure before you order

  • Measure a printed sheet with a ruler. Do not rely on the file name or template name.
  • Confirm Letter or A4: 8.5 in wide is Letter, 8.27 in is A4.
  • Count pages for each menu: food, drinks, wine, desserts.
  • Decide how often each menu changes and choose the attachment.
  • Check table size: a Legal menu needs room to open on a two-top.
  • Order spare covers: about 10% above your seat count for food menus.
  • Prepare your logo in vector format (.ai, .cdr, .eps or .svg) for debossing, engraving or UV print.
  • Order a sample box to check materials and colors before the full order.
